Mask Construction

As a goalie you get to wear cool equipment. You’ll block shots with nearly every part of your body—including your head. You need to have the mental toughness to play the position and defend your goal. We have the mask to give you the mental edge.

Let’s start with the composite materials.

A tailor would never use cheap fabrics to make a fine suit. So why would we use cheap fibreglass to make a quality mask? There are several grades of fibreglass and resins to choose from and we use the higher end materials. This eliminates the need to “reinforce” our masks to make them stronger. If we start out using strong, quality materials, we end up with a strong, quality mask.

Backplate. Ours is unique. We use a four-point harness system. Each point is individually fastened to the backplate so it’s always locked in place. The unit stays centred on your head and doesn’t shift or ‘float’ like it can on other masks.

Our harness straps are exclusive to SPORTMASK. We use our own unique strap design for good looks—and functionality. The straps slide in and out of the backplate…quickly and easily without the use of any fasteners.

Our cages are strong and always symmetrical. We use high tensile steel on all our cages. If you want to make a change to an existing cage design, then it’s no problem. We’ll manufacture a cage to your specifications. When you take one between the eyes, with a SPORTMASK it’s no problem.

As an added safety feature, our strap slots are cut smaller than the plastic buckles. This keeps the strap from sliding off if it comes undone. Your mask stays on even after deflecting a high-speed puck.

We line the interior of our masks with XLP padding for a very important reason—it’s incredible stuff! Traditional helmet and mask padding tends to get harder the more you sweat inside it. For this reason we refuse to use cheaper and more common brands of padding. The adhesive we use doesn’t separate from the mask, even after heavy use. This adhesive is moisture resistant. So play hard and sweat. We can handle both!
